Game Design with Will Wright
[Recorded November 20, 2003] Will Wright has become one of the most successful designers of interactive entertainment in the world. He began working on what would become SimCity—The City Simulator in 1985. Using a complex technique, he found a way to bring realistic simulations to desktop PCs. Previously simulations of this sort were only available to the military, scientists and academicians. However, using an easy to use graphic interface, the world of simulations opened up to consumers. Wright co-founded Maxis (now part of Electronic Arts) with Jeff Braun in 1987. SimCity was released in 1989, and within a few months became a hit. The game has since won 24 domestic and international awards. With Fred Haslem, Wright co-designed SimEarth—The Living Planet in 1990, a simulation of a planet based on the Gaia theory of James Lovelock. In 1991, Wright and Justin McCormick designed SimAnt—The Electronic Ant Colony, a scientifically-accurate simulation of an ant colony. SimCity 2000, and SimCopter, a helicopter flight game, are also part of Wright’s recent repertoire. SimCity 3000 Unlimited, the definitive version of 1999s best-selling game SimCity 3000, continued in the tradition. The long-awaited 4th generation, SimCity 4, was released in January 2003. Taking computer entertainment to its most personal level, Wrights ground-breaking game The Sims, puts players in charge of the lives of a neighborhood of simulated people. Released in February of 2000, this wildly popular …

No but I bet it was definetly an inspiration for making SIM games, which let you build more elaborate “Working” models

People here seem to be emphasising the tech part a bit too much. As Will claimed, games are part tech and part psychology. To quote Gabe Newell: “An artist who can model, or a programmer who can write, or act, will to better in the games industry than a tech geek. Miyamoto for example, hates computers. He liked to play music, go out into the woods, and fantasise about meeting fairy-creatures, all of which inspired Zelda. So read books and paint. Listen to the Ron Gilbert interview on gamespot.

Depending on the area of game design you want to work in, further maths and physics will be a big help

id suggest I.T and then go college and do a computer course there such as software development and then get your diploma etc and go to university and apply for game design

wow, amazing, superb, you name it!
I am not planing to work with games or IT at all, but the concepts and models discussed here are just sublime to be familiar with. Now I need some time to process this mass of knowledge
Will Wright is certainly AAA+++ expert in his area.

Try Blitzmax it’ll give you a good introduction to programming games, it’s a nice language to use and your finished game will be almost as fast as if it were created in C/C++ and more importantly start with small games working your way up to more difficult types of games, blackjack.tetris etc and remember always plan your game in a notebook before you even write your first piece of code

Dude. For reals, best thing you can do is get TurboPASCAL (for free online) and learn it. You won’t start at an FPS, just cause it’s so complex, you’ll finish half a room and give up. I started programming when I was 8. Start with the most basic, and as you learn more, do more things with your games. Don’t start big and crazy.
ie. Start with a text-based RPG. If you don’t know what that is, google it, there’s tons of good examples. Good luck brother! Stay motivated!

its a hard road to be a game designer, you have to be either a programmer,QA,or artist for 3 or 4 years in the industry before you even have a chance.
3 designers or so per mid sized company = very competitve.
